  4.     Even as the U.S. struggles with crack cocaine, a more
  5. chilling drug has appeared: "ice." Like crack, ice is not a new
  6. drug but a smokable version of an old one -- crystallized
  7. methamphetamine, better known as "crystal meth" and speed during
  8. the 1960s and '70s, when it was usually taken as pills or
  9. injected. In Hawaii, where the smokable version first appeared
  10. this year, it is sold in $50 cellophane packets that contain
  11. about a tenth of a gram, good for one or two hits. But smoking
  12. ice provides a high for eight hours or more, compared with less
  13. than 30 minutes for crack. It shares crack's addictive
  14. properties and produces similar bouts of severe depression and
  15. paranoia, as well as convulsions.

  17.     Ice has already become the No. 1 drug problem in Hawaii,
  18. where it is smuggled in from illegal labs in South Korea and
  19. the Philippines. Methamphetamine produced in California, Oregon
  20. and Texas is already making serious inroads across the U.S. The
  21. frustrating prospect is that if the effort to stop the cocaine
  22. flow from Latin America makes crack harder to get, users will
  23. simply shift to easily available speed. Jubilant would-be speed
  24. kings from Portland to Dallas are already making plans for vast
  25. expansions in production.
